I’m not going to lie. It has been ages since I read a male/female book, let alone a M/F erotica. But the other day, I saw one on sale and it looked decent. This happened to be a listed as a M/M/F and the cover depicted it as such. The two guys probably grabbed me more than the female 😉 Guess, I was hoping they’d have some time, but they didn’t.
The author was new to me, but from her sales and her “NY bestsellers and USA today author” subtitle on the book, I’m assuming she is pretty popular. So, I thought, hey, this will be a great book to pick up. Has to be, right? She has credits that only the lucky get.
Nope.
The two main characters were typical. Virgin woman, librarian to be exact and an Alpha motorcycle dude that doesn’t’ take no for an answer. The first time the meet, he’s telling her that she is his and that she will be punished. Yep, punished. FIRST MEETING. She doesn’t even know his name yet and she thinks it’s hot so much so that it makes her panties wet.
Anyway, I’m reading this and overall it wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t great. So, I was on a mission. I started picking up some more of these authors that have these credits and that sell thousands and thousands of books. This is what I came up with: they’re all the same. Alpha male punishing a virgin woman. lol I don’t get it. But that’s not my point. My point is this……Why aren’t the LGBT authors, that in my opinion can write circles around these other authors, getting the accreditation?
I have read so many wonderfully talented authors in my genre, ones that are deserving of so much, but the m/f take the credits. I get that the world is homophobic, but not all m/m book or f/f books are sex. I will say this, I found ALL!!! the M/F books I checked out were sex on page. Every other chapter someone was getting it on, and yes, there are m/m books that do the same, but I have found that the plots are so much better in our books!!
I’m not discrediting all M/F authors because I have friends that write and I LOVE THEIR BOOKS, and I’m not saying all M/M authors are better, but my god, the stories and feels in our genre are real and genuine. In my opinion they deserve to be heard. They deserve to be on the top of the charts.
I’m not writing this because I think I do. Lord knows, I need all the help I can get with writing, but I love it and I do it for me. I’m writing it for other authors in this genre that could write anything and make it sound like gold.
One day, maybe.
One day they’ll see a story and not a sex.
One day they’ll see love and not hate.
One day, the top ten will be filled with M/M authors 🙂
It was just something I observed and felt it needed to be said. Keep writing those beautiful stories.
Love,
Tyler
Tyler, you hit the nail on the head! I couldn’t have said it any better. I used to read those m/f books and they read like “rinse and repeat”. Then I happened on a m/m story and was hooked! There is so much more depth of honest emotion depicted. This is the only genre I worth reading IMO. And, there are so many talented authors who wrote it.
You are right, too, that they deserve more mainstream recognition and validation. After all, intrigue, adventure, angst, sweetness, tragedy and love are universal conditions. The most important observation and truth is…love is love and should be celebrated by everyone. Love will ensure no matter the obstacles.
